Civil Society, Latin America & Caribbean – Movimento Mega

João Carlos Rebello Caribé is an Activism and Policy Manager of Movimento Mega, which strives to maintain the Internet free, open, inclusive, universal, accessible, neutral, and fair. Caribé is a marketing professional with a post-graduate degree in Digital Media. He is involved with Internet since 1995. From 1996 to 2004 he created and managed Flash Brasil, one of the largest Macromedia partners in Brazil, developing innovative business models through collaborative user groups. He was a member of the Macromedia Advisory Board from 2000 to 2001, representing users in South America and Caribbean.

Since 2005, Caribé began to devote himself to struggles related to freedom on the Internet, working on mobilizations and joint policies related to society and the Brazilian parliament. In 2008, he published an online petition, which today has more than 160,000 signatures, against the Brazil’s bill 84/99 on Cybercrime, which led to several political events supporting freedom on the Internet. He also created the Movement “Mega Não” in 2009, which garnered much support, and led to the end of Bill 84/99 and the release of Internet Civil Marco, a draft anti-ACTA legislation. Mega Não” has become a powerful platform for mobilization and a resource for information against threats to Internet freedom, utilizing public hearings, lectures, interviews, flash mobs, and collective blogging. It was one important coordinator in Brazil’s Blackout against SOPA on January 18, 2014, achieving membership of over 400 Brazilian sites. In 2011, Caribé won the Frida Prize for “Mega Não” in the "freedoms" category, as a project with a prominent activity on the public and political level to avoid censorship of the Internet, which was delivered during the LACNIC XVI in Buenos Aires.

Caribé is also a member of ISOC Brasil, member of Executive Committee of NCUC in ICANN, Red Latam, Best Bits, Diplo Internet Governance Community, Dynamic Coalition on Network Neutrality, the Global Net Neutrality Coalition,Network Neutrality Squad, Internet Governance Caucus and the Internet Defense League.
