Academia, Technical Community, and Foundations, Latin America & Caribbean – Getulio Vargas Foundation School of Law

Ms Marília Maciel is a researcher and coordinator of the Center for Technology and Society of the Getulio Vargas Foundation School of Law in Rio de Janeiro. She is also a lecturer and tutor in courses offered by DiploFoundation. She serves as a councilor at ICANN´s Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO) representing the Non-commercial Stakeholder Group (NCSG). Marília was a member of the Executive Multistakeholder Committee, which took part on the organization of NETmundial and she is a former member of the Working Group on IGF improvements (2011-2012), created under the auspices of the Commission on Science and Technology for Development (UN CSTD). She represented CTS / FGV in meetings of the Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR) of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), from 2008 to 2010. Currently, she is a member of the Advisory Board on Internet security, created under the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee. Marilia is a PhD candidate on International Relations at the Pontifical Catholic University (PUC – Rio de Janeiro) developing a thesis on Internet Governance, cyber security and defense. She holds a Master's degree in Latin American Integration from the Federal University of Santa Maria (2008), and an Undergraduate in Law from the Federal University of Pernambuco (2005).

Diverse, global participation is a necessary component that embodies the NETmundial spirit and the multistakeholder, bottom-up approach endorsed as the way forward in improving the existing Internet governance framework.
