Civil Society, Asia & Oceania – Personal Capacity

Ian Peter is a professional technology and policy strategist, and project manager of Internet related projects. He currently serves as the Independent Chair of the Civil Society Internet Governance Coordination Group. Apart from managing large Internet projects for governments and advising on strategies, Ian Peter has maintained an active presence in civil society networks, having been a past Coordinator of the Internet Governance Caucus and a regular attender and speaker at Internet Governance Forum events. He has extensive experience with Internet usage in the Asian Pacific region dating from 1986, when he was commissioned by United Nations Environment Program to create an email network of peak environmental NGOs in the Asia Pacific Region. From that early experiment, he went on to be a Founding Director of the global Association for Progressive Communications (www.apc.org) in 1989, which by 1993 had created global links to nonprofit networks across over 100 countries and was a key instigator of the original ISOC Developing Countries workshops.
